We want to take some of the roadblocks out of starting a childcare business by providing the education needed to start the business and $3,000 in startup capital to get you moving.

About the Program

The McCook Community 4 Kids Core Team has spent the last year analyzing the childcare environment around McCook, devising programs to improve childcare access, and raise money to fund the programs. This program provides scholarships for individuals to take an 8 week on-line course starting on March 8. After successful completion of the program and acquiring licensure, developing a business plan, and developing a parent handbook, individuals will receive $3,000 in startup money. Individuals who receive the startup money need to agree to stay in business for two years or pay back a portion of the startup money.


Anyone is eligible to enroll and take the on-line 3-credit class through Mid-Plains Community College starting March 8.

To receive the full ride scholarship (tuition, fees, and books) and startup cash ($3,000) individuals must (RULES):

  1. Complete the application and submit it to andy@mccookne.org or 402 Norris Ave., Suite 301 by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 21.
  2. Eligible participants must be looking to start a new childcare business or have started a childcare business since January 1, 2019.
  3. Eligible participants must be considering locating their childcare business within 25 miles of McCook as measured by roads on Google Maps.
  4. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  5. Participants must agree that if they accept the scholarship they will take the mandatory online course offered through Mid-Plains Community College. If the finalist fails or withdraws from the Early Childhood Education course, the individual must reimburse MPCC for tuition and fees.
  6. To be eligible for the $3,000 start up cash, individuals must:
    • Complete their state licensure requirements
    • Turn in a parent handbook to the Community 4 Kids Team and meet with MCC Child Development Center Director Tyler Esch or her designee
    • Turn in a business plan to the Community 4 Kids Team and meet with MEDC Executive Director Andy Long or his designee
    • Agree to start a childcare business within 25 miles of McCook
    • Use the cash for their business
    •  If individuals close their childcare business within 24 months of opening, they must return a prorated amount of the startup cash to McCook Economic Development Corporation.
  7. Individuals who receive the $3,000 startup cash must complete a W-9 and will receive a 1099 form for tax purposes.
  8. Individual must be able to pass a federal and state criminal history background check and not be listed on the Nebraska Adult Protective Services and Child Abuse Neglect central registry as a perpetrator.
  9. The decision of MEDC and Mid-Plains Community College are final, including interpretation of the rules.


  • February 21, 2020: 5:00 p.m. – applications are due to andy@mccookne.org or 402 Norris Ave., Suite 301, McCook, NE 69001
  • Monday, March 2, 2020: 6:00 p.m. – orientation for individuals selected to receive a scholarship
  • Monday, March 8, 2020: Online class begins
  • Tuesday, March 31, 2020: 6:00-8:00 p.m. – cohort training/panel
  • Thursday, May 7, 2020:  Class concludes
  • Monday, August 31, 2020: Parent Handbook, Business Plan, and State Licensure must be complete to receive $3,000 startup cash. If individual isn’t ready, they can meet with Andy Long and determine a timeline that would be acceptable to qualify for the startup cash when they are ready to start their business.
